Vulnerabilities and service needs of single-parent households in New York City

One third of children in New York City live in single-parent households. These households have much higher rates of poverty and material hardships. There are approximately 250,000 single-parent households in New York City and approximately 580,000 (or 32 percent of) New York City children live in a single-parent home. This report uses Poverty Tracker data to better understand the challenges facing single-parent households and identify programs that have been particularly effective in helping these families and the potential role of public policies in improving their well-being.

The Poverty Tracker is a longitudinal study of the dynamics of poverty and disadvantage in New York City. It is a joint project of Robin Hood and Columbia University.
